Dalek

James Marshall is a painter who currently lives and works in North Carolina, and who goes by the pseudonym Dalek. In his youth, Dalek turned to punk rock, skateboarding and graffiti subcultures for inspiration, which led to his Space Monkey character. He merges street art with influences from animation, Japanese pop, and the energy of the urban punk scene. In 2001, he reached a major turning point in his studio practice while working as an assistant/apprentice to the world-renowned artist Takashi Murakami.

Originally working in a minimalist, flat style, Dalek's work often represented his feeling and love for the absurdity of human interactions. In 2007, Dalek shifted to a much more layered, complex style, and began creating paintings using his real name. His design work has crossed over a variety of mediums, including designer vinyl, skateboard decks, magazines, sneakers, sculpts, and even a Scion car. Dalek’s work has been shown in galleries and museums across North America, Europe and Japan, and even has several books and magazine under his name, including Dalek: Nickel Plated Angels and Street World: Urban Culture and Art from Five Continents.
