KAWS

KAWS

Brian Donnelly, known as KAWS in the art world, began creating art as a graffiti artist in Jersey City and New York City. After graduating from college, he worked at Disney as a freelance animator, where he painted background and helped animate 101 Dalmations, Daria, and Doug. His street art in the 1990s subverted advertising imagery on billboards, bus shelters, and phone booths. This graffiti art has since become highly sought after since KAWS's popularity skyrocketed.

He later began working in designer vinyl, and has since become a big name in the art industry, creating sculptures, apparel, paintings, and even a balloon for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Working with popular icons like the Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, and SpongeBob, he has also worked with Buron, Nike, Vans, and other apparel companies. His style is meant to be universally understood, subverting popular cartoon icons and blurring the line between fine art and mass-produced merchandise.
